The Winnipeg Jets missed out on getting the first overall pick and Auston Matthews at last year’s draft lottery, but Patrik Laine is been one heck of a consolation prize. Laine currently leads all rookies with 37 points and is tied with Matthews for the lead in rookie goals with 21.
Laine is going to be out for the foreseeable future after a run-in with Jake McCabe of the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday afternoon. McCabe, who had a big hit on Andrew Desjardins of the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday, laid out Winnipeg’s star rookie with a huge center ice collision.
On Sunday morning, Jets head coach Paul Maurice confirmed that Laine has suffered a concussion and is not sure when he will return.
“Patty’s got a concussion,” Maurice told the Jets official website. “He got tested out last night, see doctors again today. So he’ll start the stages of recovery with that. We’ll wait till the symptoms subside and then you start increasing workload and getting back on the ice.”
