Blues Closer To Getting Two Key Veterans Back

The St. Louis Blues were not predicted to get off to a great start after suffering a few key injuries during the postseason. Not only are they playing above expectations, they have the best record in the Western Conference right now.

The team is set to get even better as both center Patrik Berglund and defenseman Jay Bouwmeester are getting close to making their season debuts.

According to a report by Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, both Berglund and Bouwmeester will accompany their teammates on this week’s three-game road trip to Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. However, head coach Mike Yeo confirmed that neither will play during the trip.

Berglund, who wasn’t expected back from his shoulder injury until December, will be re-assessed by the team’s medical staff when they return home. He has been taking part in recent practices, but has not been cleared for “heavy contact” drills.

Bouwmeester is a little further away from returning from an ankle injury suffered at the beginning of the game as he just began skating on his own.

“It's a progression,” Bouwmeester said on Sunday. “I practiced today. Ideally, if we had ice (separate from the practice), I wouldn't have practiced. I would have been skating on my own or with other guys. There's steps you have to take. Morning skates, certain things you can't do. Hopefully the way things are going, that's progressing, that will turn pretty quick and I'll get back out.”
