Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson has a reputation around the league for walking the fine line between playing physical and being dirty. Opposing teams always have to be aware of where he is on the ice not because he can hurt you on the scoreboard, but that he can just hurt you.
Wilson had an interesting evening on Sunday versus Patrick Maroon and the Edmonton Oilers. Late in the first period the duo got together along the boards with Maroon showing off a takedown move that would have made UFC star Georges St. Pierre jealous.
As soon as both players got out of the penalty box for their coincidental minor penalties, they decided to drop the gloves and show off their bare knuckles skills as well as their grappling techniques.
Wilson was better at throwing punches, but outside of a bunch of jersey tugs and skating around in numerous circles, there was not a ton of landed blows in this bout.
Wilson and the Caps got the last laugh as they took home two points with a 2-1 shootout victory. To add insult to injury, Wilson had the primary assist on Dmitry Orlov’s third period game tying goal.
