The COVID-19 pandemic had a major impact on the 2019-2020 season in the NHL and and the 2020-21 season will suffer the same fate.
Chatter is starting to build up regarding a possible solution which would feature an all Canadian division.
Travel between Canada and the United States is restricted and still subject to a quarantine period which would make it impossible for the NHL to maintain the current divisions and travel.
A 100% Canadian division would guarantee some all Canadian matchups on Saturday nights for Hockey Night in Canada and at the same time helping build up some all American rivalries.
An extremely interesting point is that the creation of a Canadian division would also increase the chances of seeing the return of the Quebec Nordiques with some southern American teams suffering financially at the moment.
