There remains some pretty big names on the restricted free agent list and two of them share the same agent.
Colorado Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen and Winnipeg Jets' forward Patrik Laine are both represented by former NHL goalie Mike Liut.
Liut appeared on Sportsnet radio recently and said both his clients aren't anywhere close to signing a new deal.
While the debate is still on regarding what kind of a contract Laine deserves, Liut says that debate isn't around right now for Rantanen as Mitch Marner helped set the price.
“Is there a comparable? Yeah, I think Mitch Marner and Mikko Rantanen are probably the two closest comparables in terms of how they play the game, where you have wingers that are adept at creating offence for those that they’re playing with,” Liut said. “And they do it maybe a little bit differently — I mean, Mikko’s 225 [pounds] and Mitch is not, but Mitch is a terrier and he’s a great player.”
While Liut and his clients wait to get a new deal done, they're current practicing together with SC Bern in Europe.
“If one side doesn’t move, or if both sides don’t want to move, then it doesn’t get done, until such time as it needs to get done.”
