The Colorado Avalanche haven't been off to the start they wanted as they sit in 5th place of the Western Division playing .500 hockey.

General manager Joe Sakic has been looking for some help and came close to pulling off a blockbuster.

Various reports had the Avalanche in amongst the final teams in the running for landing Jack Eichel.

When all was said and done, the Avs lost out to the Vegas Golden Knights however Sakic is still working the phone.

According to Avs' insider Mike Chambers of the Denver Post, a big part of the Eichel proposal was young defenseman Samuel Girard and Chambers adds that the Avs are still trying to trade him.

With Girard on the trade block, Sakic is reportedly looking to land a forward.

"I believe Sam Girard was the big piece in the efforts to get Jack Eichel here and I still think Girard is going to get traded, I think the Avs want a forward for him and they want to lose his $5M long term cap hit".

"They were highly unhappy how Sam Girard played in the 2nd RD series against Vegas, his turnovers, he didn't produce offensively, he was not good and I think that has lingered on into this season and primarily it's Bo Byram that has showed the Avs that he's better than Girard".

The 23 year old defenseman has 5 assists in 9 games so far this season after registering 32 points in 48 games last year.

A road block to consider is that Girard is on a fresh contract which sees him carry an AAV of $5million through the 2026-27 season.
