While some teams found ways to get under the salary cap thanks to some LTIR contracts, others remain in salary cap trouble.
One of those teams is the New York Islanders.
The team is currently in a showdown with RFA Mathew Barzal who's looking for a significant payday that the Islanders simply don't want to give him.
Part of that reason is because they have no cap space, the other is because Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello is a strong negotiator.
This has led Barzal to stay home and not show up to camp without a contract.
It's not like the Islanders don't want him around though, he's a key part of their offense and Lamoriello has put a defenseman on the trade block hoping he can open up some cap space.
NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman reports that the Islanders are currently trying to trade Thomas Hickey as soon as possible.
Friedman adds that they'll even include a "sweetener" to get the deal done and rid the team of his $2.5million cap hit.
