It was one of the biggest stories during free agency this past summer, the Jake Gardiner sweepstakes.

It went from sweepstakes to the flea market as Gardiner couldn't find himself a contract after rejecting the Montreal Canadiens offer on July 1.

Months went by for the defenseman who was supposed to be the top option available on the market and he had to wait until September 6 to eventually sign with the Carolina Hurricanes.

That has not turned out to be a good fit for the 29 year old.

Gardiner currently plays on the team's third pairing beside Trevor van Riemsdyk and has hit ice time totals as low as 12 and 13 minutes over the last stretch of games.

He currently sits -17 on a team that has a +26 goal differential overall and Gardiner only has eight points on the season.

Signed for three more years at $4.05million per season, teams have been trying to see what it would take to pluck Gardiner from the 'Canes.

"There are teams who wonder if they can pry Gardiner out of Carolina before the Feb. 24 trade deadline because of his usage on the Hurricanes (5th Canes D TOI)... Something to monitor in the second half." mentioned Pierre LeBrun.

Do you think he'll be moved before the trade deadline?
